The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago

I've been an illustrator for a long time now, and I'm not too bad at it. I specialize in medical illustration and went through graduate school at the Medical College of Georgia (now Augusta Regents University, or maybe just Augusta University, or maybe it's Regents now. I don't know. They've changed their name like 5 times, but it will always be MCG to me.) I create custom work for people all over the country, and increasingly - all over the world.

But...

But, I've wanted to be a painter since I was a little kid. I've never not had a brush in my hand. I'm now 15 years from retirement and by the time I get there - I'd like to be a working fine artist. And that takes time. And a lot of unwinding. Medical illustration is a world of research, detail and above all - correctness. If I start now, I'm hoping I can learn to loosen up and be less literal in my approach. And it's hard to know where to start. These studies are still very illustrative in nature, but I'm finally beginning.
